Pupil Voice

Pupil Voice

At Davies Lane, we believe in consulting pupils on matters that affect them and involving them in school decision-making; this is known as Pupil Voice. Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) states:

Parties shall assure to the child who is capable of forming his or her own views the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child, the views of the child being given due weight in accordance with the age and maturity of the child.

We believe that giving pupils a voice:

  • Encourages pupils to become active participants in a democratic society
  • Contributes to achievement and attainment

There are a number of ways we ascertain the views of our pupils. These include questionnaires, Year 6 exit polls and through a range of pupil groups. At Davies Lane we have a number of pupil groups responsible for representing the opinions and views of children on a variety of things that affect our school community. These include school council, learning council, lunch bunch eco-warriors, librarians, sports ambassadors and playground advocates.

Playground Advocates

Our playground advocate scheme plays an important part in creating a safe, friendly, happy and peaceful atmosphere for children during breaktimes and lunchtimes.

Who are they?

Year 5 and 6 children take on the role of Playground Advocates. The Advocates really enjoy their responsibilities, and not only do they make the playground a happy place for all the children, but also offer a great help to the staff on duty at lunchtime.

What are our key areas of responsibility?

  • Involve children with playtime activities and prioritise pupil well-being.To help all children to learn how to play co-operatively with each other.
  • To monitor the number of children using the playground equipment.
  • To organise and manage the use of playground equipment ensuring a fair and enjoyable experience
  • Teach children to play a wider range of fun and engaging games.

 How do we spot them?

Look out for our bright high visibility jackets in the playground and come and say hello!
